Screen-Printed Mugs: Why Quality Matters Long After the First Wash

Fake designers, real lessons

Usually, I’m the world’s most reluctant shopper. My wife practically has to drag me into shops.

But during a recent trip to Vietnam, something changed. Suddenly, I was bargaining like a seasoned professional and filling bags with “luxury” designer clothing.

I say “luxury” because, despite what the sellers claimed, these items weren’t exactly coming straight from the fashion houses of Milan.

Still, I felt pretty smug about my haul.

Until laundry day.

By the third wash, those designer logos weren’t just fading. They were cracking, peeling and disappearing. My supposedly premium purchases were rapidly becoming rather expensive cleaning rags.

Naturally, it got me thinking about promotional mugs. Doesn’t everything?

Because when you’re buying screen-printed mugs, there’s a similar lesson: looking good on day one isn’t the same as being made to last.

A promotional mug needs more than a good first impression

A freshly printed mug can look fantastic in a sample photograph. The colours are bright, the logo is sharp and the price seems hard to beat.

But your client isn’t buying a photograph.

They’re buying a branded product that people will use, wash and use again. Something that will sit on desks, appear in meetings and accompany countless cups of tea.

That means the decoration needs to stand up to everyday life—not just look impressive when it comes out of the box.

If a logo starts to fade or scratch away, the mug stops doing the job it was bought to do. Worse, it can leave your client questioning the quality of the product you recommended.

Why ink choice matters for screen-printed mugs

Not all mug-printing methods use the same inks or production processes, and those differences can affect how the finished decoration performs.

Some printing systems use organic inks. These can be suitable for particular applications, but their durability depends on the formulation, curing process and intended use. An ink that works well on one promotional product isn’t automatically the right choice for a ceramic mug.

Mugs face a demanding routine:

  • Repeated exposure to hot water
  • Dishwasher detergents
  • Regular washing and handling
  • Everyday knocks and abrasion

That’s why it’s worth asking what ink system a supplier uses—and what evidence supports their durability claims.

At Prince William Pottery, we use ceramic inks for our screen-printed mugs. It’s the approach we’ve always used, because we believe lasting decoration matters just as much as a great-looking print.

Cheap branded mugs can come with a hidden cost

My old Popa—the original mug man—had a saying:

“Penny wise, pound foolish.”

He was right.

A cheaper quote might save a little money upfront. But if the decoration doesn’t meet your client’s expectations, those savings can quickly disappear.

There may be replacements to arrange, complaints to handle and awkward conversations to have. Most importantly, there’s a relationship to protect.

When your client’s logo fades, it’s not just the mug that suffers. Their confidence in your recommendation can suffer too.

That doesn’t mean the most expensive option is always the best. It means comparing more than the price.

For promotional mugs, real value comes from how well the product performs throughout its working life.

What to ask before ordering promotional mugs

Before placing your next order, ask your supplier:

  • What inks and printing process do you use? Get a clear explanation of how the mugs are decorated.
  • Is the finished decoration dishwasher safe? Ask about testing and any care instructions.
  • Can I see a sample? Check the print quality, colour and finish before committing.
  • What experience do you have? Look for a supplier with a proven track record in ceramic decoration.
  • What happens if there’s a quality issue? Understand the support available after delivery.

A reliable supplier should be happy to answer. After all, you’re trusting them with something important: your client’s brand.

Trusted mug decoration since 1937

At Prince William Pottery, we’ve been in the mug business since 1937.

We know a promotional mug needs to do more than make a good first impression. It needs to keep representing your client’s business, cup after cup.

My market-stall T-shirts taught me that a convincing logo doesn’t guarantee lasting quality.

Your clients shouldn’t have to learn that lesson through their branded mugs.
